On the Road Again...

Today, after work, we are going to visit a friend, A, in Geilenkirchen, home to a portion of the World's Biggest Gang. The city sits on the boarder of Germany and The Netherlands. My friend's house is in Germany, but the end of her street is in The Netherlands.

I was hoping not to take Crazy Dog, but P insists (she said that if he couldn't come, she didn't want to go, and the visit is her idea). He's going. Another battle lost. Since it's about a 3 hour ride, I hope they fall fast asleep, after a dinner of chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers in the back seat, while watching The Rugrats.

I'm hoping to talk A into going to Amsterdam, since it's only 1.5 hours away. If so, I'll have plenty of pictures to verify everything you've heard about A-Dam...and POSTCARDS!!!

If I don't get a chance to post this weekend, have a great weekend, stay out of the heat, it's dangerous. Coolest place in ANY city? The X-ray department in the hospital.

It's Only Fair

It's only fair that after talking trash about my brother that was 10 months late paying me back the $500 that I loaned him, that I admit that he has FINALLY paid up. I use the the term 'paid up' VERY loosley, for the following reasons:
After the date approved by him, I took the 'check' to my credit union at the the World's Busiest Air Base, the teller looked at the suspicious check, and showed it to tellers sitting to both the left AND the right of her (they both had the look of WTF? on their face after looking at it). I guess since neither the left or right teller was the Head Money Counter, she excused herself to go in the back, to talk to HMC (and show her the suspect check).

Once she returned, she informed me that the HMC said they would have to hold the suspect check for at least 10 days. Not FOR 10 days, but AT LEAST 10 days (there went plans for our IKEA shopping trip).

I told her to just deposit it into my secret account, the account where all the cashola is marinating, because I wouldn't need it for at least 10 days.
****************************************************

Why, Why, Why???

Why did one of the ladies that work in another office in the building that I work wear CLEAR HEELS and TWEED pants to work today? Is it ok to wear tweed when it's 80 degees out? I don't even remember what kind of top she had on, I was to dumbfounded by the CLEAR HEELS and TWEED. I think this is all Mary's fault for bringing it up. Too bad my camera was home on the table with a dead battery (I think I left the charger in Greece...it might be time to buy a new camera...has 10 days passed yet?)

It makes me sad when I hear the Leader of the Free World give an international speech, and when he should have said 'ideology', he said 'idea log'. Very. Sad.

No More Glasses!!!

P started wearing glasses last June, because she had an astigmatism. In January, I took her to her 6 month checkup, and she was a tad upset that she didn't leave the Doctor's office with a patch for her 'good' eye. (The doctor previously told her that if the crazy eye wasn't better, he would patch the good eye, to force her to use the crazy eye.) She wanted to be a pirate SO bad.

Today, I took her to her 3rd checkup in a year. She had to get her eyes dilated so they could test her eyes. After the test, the doctor announced that her astigmatism is practically corrected, and she no longer needs to wear glasses. I did admit to the doctor that she hasn't worn glasses in over a week. One pair became a casualty, another pair was lost at the 4th of July celebration, and the last pair was lost the second day we were in Greece. Call me a bad mother, but I TOTALLY forgot what happens when your eyes are dilated, and I took P to school right before lunch.

After class this evening, I picked P up from my friend's house, and while walking to the car, we had a conversation:

Me: How was school?
P: It was ok, I had a good day.
Me: Good.
P: There was one problem.
Me: What happened?
P: I couldn't see my hands for a long time today.
Me: What?
P: I held it like this and I couldn't see it. **opening hand in front of her face**

At that point, I remembered what happens when your eyes are dilated. She went on to inform me that she 'started seeing them again' after nap time. I think I may have lost a few Mommy points today, but I could afford it, because I DID take her to Greece.

Our Greek Adventure

Our trip to Greece was great!

We had a great time in Crete. Our hotel was in Iraklion, the capital of Crete.

More pictures from Crete here.

The entire 7 days we were in Greece we didn't see one American. The hotel was about 40% Czech, 40% Polish, 2% French, less than 1% English, the rest was the Ukraine, Austrian, Romania, and other countries from that region. Most of the people spoke some form of English, enough to communicate.

My 2 new favorite words:

ALL INCLUSIVE means FREE drinks at the 2 poolside bars, FREE food (the eating machine ate her share), FREE juice, coffee, soda and water, FREE everything in the hotel.

The hotel also had a Kid's Club, where the kids played games, did crafts, and went on 'field trips' to nearby beaches:

The first few days, P didn't want to go to the club, but towards the end of the week, that is where you found her, if she wasn't hanging out at the bar drinking pineapple juice. At the club, P was a semi celebrity, with both the other kids and their families. Most had never seen a non-white person, and they loved P.

Saturday, we just lounged around the pool, where P joined a water aerobics class:

Sunday, we went to WATER CITY! (that's how P says it):

The park is on the top of one of the mountains, about 25 minutes from the hotel. It is a huge water park with lots of slides, a wave pool, a 'lazy' river, and plenty of places for P to play.

Monday, we went to the island of Santorini. To get there, we took this boat (the big one):

More pictures from Santorini here.

The cruise took about 4 hours, and the ship was a real cruise ship, complete with restaurants, bars, a swimming pool, and a play room for the kids:

The island of Santorini was nice. There are parts of the island that is not accessible by car. The only way to get down to the port where the ship was waiting for us was either by tram, donkey, or walk the 650+ steps (if you are wondering, I paid the 3.50 Euro and we took the tram).

This is the east side of the island:

The remainder of our week was spent walking around the city, and checking out the more beaches:

This is the sunset we saw every night:

This is the view out the airplane window when we were leaving:

Notice how close the ocean is? You can stand on the edge of the runway, and throw a rock in the ocean.
****************************************************

That is the summary of our trip to Greece. Next trip? London next month because P informed me that if she doesn't see the Lion King musical again soon, she won't 'make it'.

Hello From Crete, Greece!!

We are in Crete, having a GREAT time! Lots of sand, sun and as P says 'men in tiny swimming panties'.

I have LOTS to blog about, when it won't cost me P's college fund (internet cafes here are expensive!).

Take care, all!!

Weekend Festivities

The World's Busiest Airbase had it's annual July 4th fest this past weekend, complete with overpriced rides and games, beer, bratwurst, foods fried beyond recognition, and pony rides.

We didn't go on Friday because I had to work and the festivities started at noon. I can't remember what we did on Saturday (probably went to the commissary). Sunday afternoon, I gave P some clothes to put on so we could go to the fest. While she was getting dressed in the living room, I heard her singing. When I finished getting dressed, I returned to the living room, and this was the scene of the crime:

Me: Hey, why are your pajama bottoms on the light?
P: I was getting dressed, and they fell up there.
Me: How did they fall up there? How were you dancing?
P: I was dancing like the Dancing Grandma *scroll down for pics in link* on your computer.
Me: Oh...
****************************************************

Monday, while at the fest (again), this time to see the fireworks, I spotted this poor kid (the one in the box):

Apparently, someone's kid was the mascot for his parent's club or squadron, which was selling chicken sandwiches. He wore that box the ENTIRE 5+ hours we were there. Did you notice that the box said they have 'Low Carb' available? What's that, a chicken sandwich, minus the bread?

I hope he got at least a couple of chicken sandwiches out of the deal.
**********************************************

Earlier today, I was talking to a friend who had the day off, and mentioned that P was really tired this morning because we stayed for the fireworks last night. She offered to pick P up from daycare and let her sleep the afternoon away at her house...what a GREAT friend, to spend her afternoon off with my tired baby, so I can continue to pick cotton for Uncle LeRoy!!!!
***************************************************

Can someone PLEASE send me the July issue of Essence magazine??? For some strange reason, they still have the June issue for sale on base, and DO NOT tell me to go off base and buy it...AIN'T gonna happen. It does not exist outside of the base.
***************************************************

If you want a postcard from Greece, let me know!

What Would You Do?

UPDATE: Operation BUTTon (thanks, HDL) is failing miserably. I haven't seen it, and yesterday P informed me that she 'don't want to talk about it any more'. The Doc said that as long as she's not in distress, she'll be fine.
***************************************************

DECISIONS, DECISIONS...

Our flight to Greece departs at 5am on Friday, and our flight back to Germany lands at 11pm. The airport is about 1 hour from the house, which means that I would have to leave the house by 3am, and we wouldn't get home until about 2am. My travel agent's effort to 'maximize my holiday' has left me with a decision to make.

SCENARIO #1

Drive both days, both during the night, leave car parked at the airport. *Most expensive

SCENARIO #2

Stay in a hotel in Frankfurt near the airport Thursday night, and the night we return, so I won't have to make the drive home during the night. I would leave the hoop d'ville at the Newest Closed Base near the airport, which means free parking, and take a taxi to the airport. (The airline we are flying allows for late night check in. I can check in Thursday night, so we won't have to stand in line on Friday morning, just go straight to the gate.)

SCENARIO #3

Rent a car to drop off at the airport, and pick one up to drop off near the World's Busiest Airbase when we return. There would be no parking to pay, but I WOULD have to drive during the night~both ways. *Least expensive
****************************************

Considering we leave in 6 days, I think I need to make a decision soon. I think scenario #2 is most logical. Maybe I should start packing, too.

What do you think?
